The UK’s New Medium Helicopter (NMH) program has entered a new phase intending to enhance the country’s helicopter capabilities.

The program aims to acquire a multirole medium-lift helicopter that can carry out tasks previously performed by five different aircraft, streamlining operations and improving efficiency.

“Once in service, it will provide the Armed Forces with a new medium lift aircraft capable of operating in all environments in support of a broad spectrum of Defence tasks, from warfighting to humanitarian efforts and operations around the world,” the UK Ministry of Defence explained in a statement.

An ‘Invitation to Negotiate’ was issued to the three primary suppliers: Airbus Helicopters UK, Leonardo Helicopters UK, and Lockheed Martin UK.

They will now submit their bids for the project, and the competition will assess both operational and industrial factors, prioritizing UK skills and export potential, in alignment with the Government’s Defence & Security Industrial Strategy.

“Proposals will be evaluated through 2025 when, subject to Government approvals, a contract award is anticipated,” the MoD concluded.
