A Cathay Pacific flight attendant was left to hold up a toilet door during a 16-hour long haul flight after it broke.
The incident occurred on July 15, 2024 when flight CX 840 was en route to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) one of the lavatory doors on the A350-900 aircraft came off its hinges just three minutes into the flight.
It is not known how this was discovered, and whether there had been a passenger in the lavatory when the door came loose.
One of the passengers on the flight took a photograph of a flight attendant holding the toilet door up while she was strapped in a jump seat. Another photograph showed flight attendants attempting to fix the broken door.
The images were posted to Threads, Instagrams’ text app, and has since been reposted and shared on X (formerly Twitter).
According to flight tracking website FlightAware, the flight arrived at the gate in JFK Airport at 21:08 local time, about 30 minutes later than the scheduled arrival time of 20:35.
There were no reports of injury on the flight and Cathay Pacific said its engineering team is investigating the incident.
The Hong Kong-based carrier also made headlines on July 17, 2024 when footage taken of one of its ground workers appeared to show lack of care for passengers’ luggage.
In the video, the ground worker can be seen carelessly tossing checked-in baggage down a flight of stairs.
Cathay Pacific has since issued an apology, stating that the ground worker had violated the airline’s baggage handling procedures and was removed from her position. The airline claimed investigations were also taking place.
