Thales has announced a new upgrade to its Talios laser designation pod, specifically designed for Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jets. This enhancement introduces artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to the pod, enabling real-time onboard image analysis that improves the speed and accuracy of object detection while reducing cognitive workload for pilots.

The AI integration, powered by Thales’ cortAIx accelerator, processes airborne imagery up to 100 times faster than previous models. Thales eliminates the need for external data links by embedding this capability directly into the pod, ensuring secure and uninterrupted operation in complex combat scenarios. This advancement is set to debut with the arrival of the Rafale standard F4.3 in 2026.

One of the key improvements of the Talios pod is its ability to pre-select objects of interest using AI. This feature assists pilots by highlighting relevant information for decision-making, while preserving their autonomy in critical engagement situations. Developed in collaboration with operational personnel, the system was trained on classified imagery databases to ensure its reliability during missions.

Beyond individual missions, these enhancements also meet the demands of future collaborative combat environments, where the efficient sharing of data is essential. By streamlining information delivery, the AI-driven Talios pod ensures that pilots and decision-makers receive actionable intelligence without overloading communication channels or compromising situational awareness.

Sébastien Lecornu, the French Minister of the Armed Forces, has confirmed the development of a new combat drone designed to complement the upcoming Rafale F5 standard, which is set for deployment by 2033. This drone will serve as a forward reconnaissance unit, tasked with breaching enemy defenses and gathering intelligence prior to the Rafale engaging in combat.

AI-powered Talios pod enhances Rafale’s aerial reconnaissance capabilities

Introduced with the F-3R standard, the Talios pod has become an integral component of the Rafale, supporting missions such as intelligence gathering, target acquisition, tracking, and laser designation. It delivers high-resolution imagery in both near-infrared and infrared spectrums, enabling effective operations across diverse environmental conditions.

Rafale fighters from the French Air and Space Force were deployed for the first time to Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania on November 25, 2022, duly taking over the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. These aircraft were seen equipped with the Talios pod for long-range aircraft identification.

Recent Talios updates have included new high-definition capabilities that provide more detailed near-infrared images for the crew, plus the integration of a wide-field visible color sensor which allows for the coloring of high-definition video. Additionally, a new data link integrated into the pod allows for the transmission of video and metadata to ground troops, enhancing the coordination of operations such as target designation and fire control.

The integration of AI further elevates these capabilities, allowing for rapid, real-time image analysis. This advancement enables pilots to identify small or camouflaged targets from greater distances, enhancing the Rafale’s effectiveness in stand-off operations.
