Sacramento International Airport (SMF) has started construction of a new $140 million pedestrian walkway to connect Terminal B to Concourse B.
The new skybridge will include moving sidewalks, escalators, and elevators as well as feature three major art installations, costing $2.5 million.
According to Sacramento County, the new walkway aims to improve passenger convenience and connectivity by allowing travelers to walk or ride the Automated People Mover.
“By transforming how people experience travel, we’re enhancing our community’s connection to the region and the world, boosting our economy and improving our quality of life,” Cindy Nichol, Director of Sacramento County Department of Airports, said in a press release.
The project is funded by $33 million in grant funds provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), alongside the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA), and airport revenue bonds. Balfour Beatty was selected as the project’s Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR).
The pedestrian walkway is just the first step in Sacramento International Airport’s $1.3 billion SMForward initiative. In the first four years of the program, the airport is expected to generate 800 new jobs.
