Singapore’s Changi Airport nears full recovery, records 16.5 million pax for Q2

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) has reported that it handled 16.5 million passenger movements during the second quarter of this year (April to June 2024), an increase of 13.4% when compared to 2023.

The award-winning airport said that this figure equalled 98.2% of total passenger movements for the same period in 2019.

The airport’s aircraft movements, including landings and take-offs, totalled 89,300 for the quarter, up 9.7% year-on-year, and was 94.5% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

New airlines and routes 

For the airport’s new and reinstated services in 2024’s second quarter, Changi welcomed Shandong Airlines, which started three-times-weekly services between Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport (TNA) and Changi Airport on April 19, 2024, and Air Japan which commenced five-times-weekly services between Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) and Singapore on  April 26, 2024.

Emirates extended one of its four daily Dubai-Singapore services to Phnom Penh in May 2024. Scoot’s new Embraer E190-E2 made its inaugural flight from Changi to Krabi and Hat Yai on  May 7, 2024, and is to offer passengers more options within Southeast Asia including Koh Samui and Sibu.

Singapore Airlines also launched non-stop services between London Gatwick Airport (LGW) and Singapore in June 2024, adding five-time- weekly flights to the existing 49 weekly services. Jetstar began twice-weekly seasonal flights to Broome International Airport (BIA) in Western Australia on June 25, 2024.

Changi also resumed its link to Jieyang Chaoshan Airport (SWA), with the launch of Spring Airlines’ four-times-weekly services from March 31, 2024, as well as to Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport (JJN) in China, with the launch of Xiamen Airlines’ four-times-weekly services starting June 24, 2024.

As of July 1, 2024, 94 airlines operate over 6,900 weekly scheduled flights at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to 158 cities in 50 countries.

Markets

For the second quarter of 2024, the airport’s top markets were Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Australia and India, with China seeing the highest growth among them.

The airport reported that traffic from China had doubled when compared to the same period last year, and surpassed pre-Covid numbers. North Asia was found to be the fastest growing region, registering a 40.8% increase year-on-year, and also exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

Cargo

Changi Airport registered 486,000 tons of air freight throughout, surpassing the same period in 2023 by 16%. Growth was registered across all cargo flows – exports, imports and transshipments – led by strong cargo flows between Singapore and China, as well as the US. Changi’s top five air cargo markets in Q2 of 2024 were Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and the US.
