Qantas has unveiled the next generation of its business class product, revealing new lie-flat suites for both its incoming Airbus A321XLR narrowbody fleet and its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
The announcement comes at a time when the airline is pushing deeper into premium travel amid the largest fleet renewal in its history.
The reveal covers two key updates to the airline’s business class offering: a completely new suite bringing lie-flat capability to a Qantas single-aisle aircraft for the first time, and an evolved version of its existing Dreamliner suite with added privacy features and more sleeping space.
A lie-flat first for Qantas narrowbodies
The A321XLR suites will be arranged in a 1-1 configuration using an angled herringbone layout, a first for any Qantas single-aisle aircraft.
According to the airline, every seat converts into a lie-flat bed and includes a sliding privacy door, designed to create a self-contained space for working, dining, and sleeping on longer overnight flights.
Each suite features a 19-inch entertainment screen, wireless and USB-C charging, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, and storage designed to keep a laptop and personal items within easy reach throughout the flight.
The suites are designed specifically for the A321XLR’s longer-range capability. With a range of up to 8,700 kilometers, more than 3,000 kilometers further than the Boeing 737, the aircraft will operate transcontinental services to and from Perth as well as short and medium-haul international routes.
The first of 16 A321XLRs configured with the new Business Suites is scheduled to arrive in 2028.
Dreamliner suites get a privacy upgrade
Alongside the A321XLR reveal, Qantas has also unveiled an updated Business Suite for its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. Each aircraft will feature 42 suites, now equipped with sliding privacy doors for the first time on a Qantas Dreamliner.
The refreshed suites offer new 80-inch lie-flat beds with a wider footwell, a change Qantas said was developed through ergonomic trials and customer feedback.
The design draws on Australia’s landscape, with a 19-inch screen and restyled personal storage space finished in a color inspired by the red earth of Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
Premium demand driving the investment
Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said the new suites reflect how demand for premium travel has shifted, noting that premium cabin revenue is growing at twice the rate of economy across the airline’s international network.
The next-generation aircraft joining the fleet will carry a higher proportion of premium seats than the planes they replace.
Hudson said investing in new aircraft remains one of the most significant ways the airline can improve the flying experience. She pointed to Qantas’ history of innovation in the space, noting that the airline introduced Business Class to the world in 1979, and that the new suites represent another step in redefining what that means for customers on domestic and short to medium-haul international services.
