On the night of September 4, 2024, a Merlin Mk4 helicopter participating in a training exercise with the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth tragically crashed into the sea, resulting in the death of one crew member. The crash took place in the English Channel near Dorset during a night flying drill.
The Royal Navy confirmed the death of one of the three crew members aboard the Merlin Mk4 helicopter. The body of the deceased has not yet been recovered. The two other occupants were rescued from the water and are treated in a hospital. They did not suffer any serious injuries.

The AW101 Merlin helicopter, developed by Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland), is a medium-lift helicopter. The Royal Navy operates two versions: the MK2, used primarily for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare, and the MK4, designed for troop transport by the Royal Marines. The latter was the version involved in the fatal crash.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth recently returned to sea after undergoing six months of repairs, which included replacing its two drivelines. The aircraft carrier is now resuming operations and preparing for future engagements.
