A man who had been sold fake plane tickets went on a rampage at Chile’s Santiago Airport (SCL) and destroyed about $20,000 worth of equipment at the American Airlines desk.
The traveler, who several media outlets have identified as a construction worker, reportedly showed up at the airline desk to check-in for his flight to Aeroport International Toussaint Louverture (PAP) in Port Au Prince via Miami International Airport (MIA).
The man’s rampage was captured on video taken by onlookers, which was then uploaded on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The video shows the man smashing monitors, computers and other equipment with a hammer.
He even walked over to the other side of the check-in desk, which airline staff had deserted, and proceeded to methodically destroy equipment.
The total cost of damaged equipment is estimated to be $20,000.
The enraged passenger was eventually detained by the Western Santiago Prefecture Police.
“Local authorities were called to deal with a disruptive individual in the airport lobby area. We thank our team for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” an airline spokesperson told Spanish news media outlet Marca.
