Electra, a startup developing an ultra-short takeoff and landing (STOL) hybrid-electric aircraft, announced on August 18, 2026, that it has conducted a series of demonstration flights testing the capability of this novel aircraft to operate as a feeder for major airports.
The flight program took take place under the aegis of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), backed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and also saw support from the Department of Transportation of two states: Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The flight program began at Electra’s base in Manassas, Virginia and made its final stop at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Pennsylvania.
Along the way, Electra’s “Goldfinch” demonstrator stopped at several small regional airports: Millville Executive Airport (MIV) and Atlantic City Bader Field (AIY), both in New Jersey, and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE), Pennsylvania.
One of the key aims of the project was to test the integration of small hybrid-electric aircraft like Electra’s, which is designed to provide air network capillarity by servicing multiple small, underused airfields in the US national airspace management system.
“Electra’s Ultra Short aircraft can create direct connections between communities, regional airports, and major hubs, unlocking a faster, more accessible way to travel,” said Marc Allen, Electra’s CEO, in a press release announcing the milestone. “With the FAA, PennDOT, and NJDOT, we are laying the foundation for Direct Aviation and extending America’s leadership into a new generation of flight.”
In parallel to this initiative, Electra currently has other projects underway to test its technology in real operational conditions.
These include a demonstration flight program in Florida, to be conducted with that state’s Department of Transportation and several private-sector partners; a project with Signature Aviation and Vertiports by Atlantic to test the suitability of its ultra-STOL aircraft for operations at heliports in the New York/New Jersey area; and another testing program in Louisiana together with Bristow Group.
