A 57-year old woman has been found dead under a baggage carousel conveyor belt at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Firefighters were called to the airport at around 07:45 local time on August 8, 2024.

When the Chicago Fire Department made the grim discovery, at around 08:00 local time, they found that the woman’s body had become entangled in the baggage machinery.

At this point, it is not clear how the woman made her way into the baggage processing area, which was not accessible to the public. Nor is it known whether the woman was a traveler or an airport employee.

Police told ABC News that surveillance footage of Terminal 5, where the particular baggage carousel is located, showed the woman entering “an unoccupied restricted area”  at 02:27 local time on August 8, 2024.

The area had since been declared a crime scene, and the Chicago Police Department is currently investigating.

With 73.9 million passengers processed during 2023, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is considered by the Airports Council International to be ninth busiest airport in the US.
