Travel plans went up in smoke when a baggage scanner at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) caught fire, delaying a flight bound for Bali’s Denpasar International Airport (DPS).
Video footage of the incident, which occurred on August 6, 2024 at around 06:30 local time, was captured by a passenger who arrived at Gate D46 and was about to board Scoot flight TR280 to Bali.
The passenger, who uploaded the video clip to TikTok, wrote, “When you’re about to board your flight to Bali and the x-ray machine bursts into flames.”
The clip shows thick clouds of black smoke billowing from the X-ray machine while flames can be seen underneath. A monitor shows the details of the flight bound for Bali including a boarding time of 07:10.
Passengers can be seen lined up and curiously looking, with some whipping out their mobile phones and taking photos and footage of the unfolding incident. Fire extinguishers were used to tackle the blaze. Another clip shows passengers fleeing the scene and covering their faces as smoke continues to envelop a big portion of the terminal.
The Strait Times reported that two airport staff members were able to extinguish the fire in 40 minutes. No injuries were reported.
A spokesperson for Changi said the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
Scoot passengers were taken to a different gate and were able to board their flight to Bali two hours later.
