Turbulence hits EVA Air flight during meal service, injuring six crew members

An EVA Air flight to Taiwan was hit by severe turbulence during meal service, leaving six crew members with minor injuries and spilling passenger’s food.    

According to local Taiwanese media outlet Formosa News, the incident occurred on August 11, 2024, at about 16:55 local time when flight BR238, operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft, was heading from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). The flight left Jakarta at 14:30 local time.  

The turbulence occurred around two hours into the flight during meal service, when the aircraft was at an altitude of 37,000 feet. 

Footage of the incident was widely shared on social media by the local media and showed meals and drinks spilled all over the cabin.

One passenger took to Threads, saying she received a “Coca-Cola hair rinse” during the turbulence.  

The incident left six flight attendants with minor injuries. One flight attendant told the Taiwanese press that she was saved from crashing into the ceiling because one passenger grabbed her by the arm. 

There are no reports of any passenger injuries. 

The aircraft safely landed in TPE at 21:16 local time the same day.
