The design has been unveiled for Poland’s new projected airport, ‘Centralny Port Komunikacyjny’ (CPK). This new large scale greenfield infrastructure is set to be located some 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of the country’s capital, Warsaw.

The concept is the work of a consortium formed by the British architectural studio Foster + Partners and engineering firm Buro Happold.

‘Centralny Port Komunikacyjny’(CPK), or ‘Solidarity Transport Hub Poland’ in English, has been conceived as a multi-modal national transport hub comprising a two-runway airport and major railway station, with connections to several major cities in Poland, as well as to the nearby capital.

The 400,000 sq.m airport terminal will have capacity to handle 40 million passengers, although it could potentially be expanded to 65 million by 2060. The project is also contemplating the development of an adjacent ‘Airport City’, with an industrial and business services area, including several hotels.

After selecting the final design, the project is now moving onto the construction stage, with 2028 as the estimated entry into service.
