Israeli military forces have confirmed that it shot down an “aircraft” that appeared to enter its airspace from across the border in Syria.

The incident came just hours after Israel launched an airstrike at several locations in Syria’s Homs province on April 2, 2023.

According to the Syrian government five of its soldiers were wounded during the bombing.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which documents military activity in Syria, Sunday’s airstrike by Israel was its ninth attack since the start of the year.

According to the Associated Press air force helicopters and fighter jets were scrambled when the unidentified aircraft entered Israeli air space from the direction of Syria.

According to a statement from the Israeli Defence Force the aircraft was monitored and did not pose a threat at any point. It was eventually shot down by the Israeli military.

In its reporting the Associated Press described the aircraft as a “drone”.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not address the air strikes directly on Sunday but did speak out against terrorist regimes.

“We are exacting a high price from the regimes that support terror outside Israel’s borders,” he said.

Attacks by Israel in Syria are not uncommon as it targets Iran-allied militant groups that entered Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad.

In March Israeli rockets struck Aleppo Airport on two occasions causing material damage and disrupting services.
