Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO) has announced its plans to build the world’s largest single-span aircraft maintenance hangar at Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport (XMN) in China.

The construction process of the new aircraft maintenance facility comes as the largest single HAECO investment since its inception. With construction area of 292,300 square meters and an apron area of 284,000 square meters, the new hangar will cover a total area of 537,300 square meters, HAECO wrote in its statement released on January 8, 2023.

“A total of 18 new buildings will be constructed to cater to apron engineering, engine test bays, utility tunnel, aviation fuel supply, and other outdoor works,” the provider of aircraft engineering and maintenance services said.

The MRO facility will feature an innovative ‘center-axle’ design, which will connect hangars and ancillary buildings which will facilitate logistics management and resource sharing. The building will also be equipped with intelligent lighting controls and intelligent building management as well as advanced water storage, air conditioning, wastewater, and air treatment systems.

In order to provide flexible parking for multiple aircraft types, the facility will have six narrow-body and twelve wide-body maintenance bays as well as two separate aircraft painting bays.

According to HAECO, once completed, the HAECO Xiamen will become “the largest single-span aircraft maintenance hangar in the world”.
