Authorities in the United States (US) are trying to locate a door that separated from a small plane shortly after it took off from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) in New York.

According to Cheektowaga Police Department, a small aircraft with two people on board took off from Buffalo around 5.40 pm on February 12, 2024, but several minutes into the flight the pilot reported that a door had fallen from the aircraft.

It is understood that the aircraft involved in the incident was a single-engine Diamond DA40 which safely landed back at BUF at the Signature Aviation terminal.

“A small plane carrying two people reported losing a door to the plane while flying over the area of Stiglmeier Park in Cheektowaga. The plane is reported to have landed safely,” Cheektowaga Police Department said in a statement.

Efforts to find the missing door have so far been unsuccessful but police said there had been no reports of damage to any property or injuries to members of the public.

The incident came on the same day that a vigil was being held in the area for those that were killed when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed near Buffalo on February 12, 2009.

All 49 people onboard the Bombardier Q400 died along with one person on the ground.

The accident was the last fatal crash to occur in the US.
