British Airways (BA) and Indian low-cost airline IndiGo have signed a codeshare agreement that will facilitate connectivity between India and the UK.

Passengers will be able to travel on a single ticket between several Indian cities and London-Heathrow airport. Transfers to and from Kochi, Goa, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, Rajkot and Vadodara will be made via Mumbai (BOM) and, in the case of Amritsar, via New Delhi (DEL).

Although IndiGo’s basic service is no-frills and passengers are required to pay for any extras, those connecting from BA flights will be able to enjoy onboard services such as a complimentary meal and a baggage allowance that includes two checked bags of up to 23 kilos per person.

The latter point is significant, as mismatched expectations about the type of service offered onboard an IndiGo flight code-shared with Turkish Airlines were reportedly at the root of an argument between passengers and crew that went viral in December 2022.

With this deal, British Airways expands its footprint in India, where it currently serves five destinations from London Heathrow (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad). In 2024, BA will mark the 100th anniversary of its first service to India.
