A passenger at Bangkok’s Mueang Airport (DMK) has had her leg amputated by medical emergency staff after it became stuck inside a moving walkway.
The female traveller was in the airport’s south corridor, between Gate 4 and Gate 5 of the second domestic terminal, at 8.27am on Thursday, June 29, 2023, when the freak accident occurred.
According to the Bangkok Post, the passenger was about to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when she tripped over her suitcase and her leg became stuck.
In published photos it appears the woman’s leg became trapped in the gap where the moving walkway meets the pathway.
According to the airport officials, the woman’s left leg was amputated just above the knee and then she was rushed to the nearby Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital in Sai Mai district. However, she was then transferred to Bumrungrad Hospital.
“On behalf of the Don Mueang International Airport, I’d like to express my deepest condolences regarding the accident,’ Don Mueang airport director Karun Thanakuljeerapat said during a news conference. “I’d like to insist that we will ensure that no such accident will happen again.”
Karun Thanakuljeerapat also said the airport would take responsibility for the medical costs incurred by the passenger, as well as further compensation.
