As global air travel surges post-pandemic, the aviation sector, which operates in recurring cycles, is beginning to show the first signs of market pressure. Many airlines are now implementing hiring freezes and taking other precautions, raising questions about the unpredictable future. AirExplore CEO, Martin Stulajter, believes that while the European market may be reaching its peak, there are still plenty of opportunities in emerging markets.

“Demand is a broad, complex term,” Stulajter notes. “In Europe, I’d expect demand to hit its limits within the next one to two years. Emerging markets, on the other hand, still have significant growth potential that could last for many years. What we see today is remarkable — the demand for ACMI services has never been this strong, largely due to OEM supply chain issues. That said, it is likely to stabilize over the next two to three years.”

Successes, setbacks, and lessons from 2024

For AirExplore, 2024 was full of positive changes. From a fleet of 9 to 16 aircraft in less than a year, the company strengthened its position in both the ACMI and cargo markets. This expansion led to a notable increase in operational capacity, carrying 29,521 tons of cargo. Staff numbers also grew, from 359 in 2023 to 415 in 2024.

“Of course, nearly doubling our fleet and increasing our presence across different markets were major achievements. But at the same time, this growth brought challenges — a test of our ability to adapt and effectively manage such a fast-paced expansion,” Stulajter reflects on the key moments for AirExplore.

One of the biggest challenges in 2024 was managing workforce strain. “Rapid growth stretched our teams, especially when it came to onboarding and training new staff to support the expanded fleet,” Stulajter explains. Despite these pressures, the hard work and dedication of the airline’s employees kept operations running smoothly even during the high season.

To address any reoccurring staffing issues, AirExplore is introducing mentorship programs and investing in leadership development to help managers empower their teams. These initiatives are designed not only to relieve immediate pressures but also to lay the groundwork for long-term, sustainable growth. Stulajter adds: “By leveraging the lessons of 2024, we are positioning ourselves to navigate future complexities with greater efficiency.”

What to expect moving forward

As the aviation industry adapts to new technologies, environmental concerns, and changing market dynamics, sustainability has become a top priority. ACMI providers like AirExplore are committed to supporting greener air travel by offering modern, fuel-efficient aircraft on a flexible basis to help airlines optimize fleet usage and reduce both excess capacity and emissions. AirExplore is also exploring the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) to reduce its carbon footprint and align with industry efforts to lower emissions. Plus, by operating an all-Boeing 737-800 fleet, the company improves operational efficiency and minimizes its environmental impact.

Emerging markets are also changing the game, with their untapped potential set to drive further innovation and demand, especially in regions like Asia and Africa, where expanding aviation networks and growing passenger numbers are reshaping the industry. “AirExplore is well-positioned to assist airlines in these fast-developing regions with flexible, scalable solutions,” notes Stulajter.

Along with these changes, digital transformation also deserves a mention for its impact on everything from customer service to operational efficiency. Through the integration of predictive maintenance, data analytics, and automation, airlines and ACMI providers can streamline operations, reduce costs, and improve reliability. Staying ahead of these trends is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge in this highly competitive industry.

Positioned for growth in 2025

Considering the potential of the ACMI market and the opportunities emerging in key regions, the road ahead looks promising yet challenging. With a strong focus on operational excellence and sustainable growth, AirExplore is looking forward to navigating the next phase of the “growth cycle.” By addressing internal process improvements, staying aligned with global aviation trends, and being backed by the strength of the Group, the company will continue to leverage its network and expertise to meet the evolving demands of the market.
