Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Volaris has become the first non-United States airline to take delivery of an aircraft, an Airbus A320neo, manufactured at Airbus’ production facility in Alabama.
As of May 30, 2023, Airbus had produced 385 aircraft belonging to the A320 and A220 families at its North American plant, located in Mobile, Alabama. But until now these had all been delivered to US airlines, 13 customers in total.
Volaris became the first airline in North America to receive an A320neo back in 2016, although on that occasion the aircraft was ferried from Europe.
The Mexican airline, which is part of Indigo Partners’ portfolio of low-cost carriers alongside Wizz Air, Frontier Airlines and JetSmart, operates an all-Airbus fleet.
Volaris announced the launch of 40 new domestic routes in Mexico on May 29, 2023.
