Zayed International Airport’s (AUH) Northern Runway (13L/31R) is now fully operational after reopening ahead of schedule following a rehabilitation and upgrade plan.
The project included reinforcing and resurfacing the runway with 210,000 tons of asphalt. Technical upgrades included a new ground visibility monitoring system and a high-tech Instrument Landing System (ILS), bolstering both the safety and efficiency of takeoff and landing operations during periods of inclement weather.
The upgrades also included the replacement of more than 1,200 energy-intensive halogen airfield lights with environmentally friendly LED technology.
“The successful completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project underscores the strategic vision of Abu Dhabi Airports and the UAE’s dedication to innovation and sustainable aviation growth. It reinforces our commitment to elevating UAE airports’ global reputation, in line with the national vision for long-term prosperity,” said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

This enhanced infrastructure will help us manage growing air traffic and optimize airport efficiency at AUH,” said Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports.
During the Northern Runway’s rehabilitation period, AUH was able to successfully operate using just the Southern Runway, maintaining uninterrupted daily operations and ensuring safety.
The return to dual-runway operations will enable the airport to better meet the rising demand from airlines.
