Eurowings Germany, a low-cost subsidiary of German flag carrier Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA), is facing operational challenges after a pilots strike causes the budget airline to cancel hundreds of flights.

The one-day strike, which took place on October 2, 2022, saw pilots, led by union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), asking for better working conditions. According to Eurowings, the industrial action disrupted the air travel plans of at least 30,000 passengers.

The strike is due to end before midnight on the same day.

Why are pilots at Eurowings Germany striking?

Pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit announced the strike action after the tenth round of negations with management about improving working conditions stalled.

The pilots challenged the low-cost carrier to provide better pay, citing increased living costs in the country. The flight crew also asked for roster adjustments, additional rest days between duty time, and a reduction in the maximum active duty hours.

“There are no plans for further labor disputes at the moment. But that cannot be ruled out,” a VC spokesperson told Reuters.
