Wizz Air Malta, a subsidiary Hungarian ultra-low-cost-carrier Wizz Air, has been granted an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and an Operating License (OL) by the Malta Civil Aviation Directorate (CAD).

According to Wizz Air president Robert Carey, the official establishment of the new branch supports the parent company’s multi-AOC strategy and will help the airline strengthen its position in Malta and across Europe.

“From now on Wizz Air Malta will be subject to EASA’s continuous oversight, as it is already the case of its sister/mother company Wizz Air Hungary. This ensures that the entire EU operations of the Wizz Air group meet the EU’s safety requirements, which are among the most stringent in the world,” EASA flight standards director Jesper Rasmussen was quoted as saying in a Wizz Air statement.

The new Malta-based carrier performed its first flight on September 27, 2022, flying from Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO).

“The establishment of Wizz Air Malta will allow the group to further diversify its operations, providing enhanced flexibility and the potential for significant expansion,” the airline’s statement reads.

As of September 2022, Wizz Air currently operates multiple AOCs, including Wizz Air UK and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and Wizz Air Hungary. The carrier has a total of 166 Airbus A320 and A321 passenger planes in its fleet.
