Three killed in mid-air collision in Colorado

A mid-air collision between a Cessna 172 and a Sonex Xenos sport aircraft occurred in Longmont, Colorado, US, on September 17, 2022. 

The aircraft collided approximately 6 kilometers (4 miles) south of Vance Brand Airport, scattering parts across a large area. 

Boulder County Sheriff’s Department received several emergency phone calls from locals at 8:54 AM MDT (14:54 GMT), according to CBS Colorado. Emergency services soon located the crash sites of the two aircraft. 

The wreck of the Cessna 172 contained the bodies of the two passengers. The Sonex Xenos – a small home-built aircraft – was piloted by one person, who also died. 

According to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an investigation into the accident was launched. 

ABC News reports that several roads around the crash sites had to be closed due to the investigation.
