Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air plans to exercise its option to purchase 75 Airbus A321neo passenger planes with the goal of expanding its current fleet to 500 aircraft by the end of 2030.
According to Wizz Air chief executive Jozsef Varadi, the airline reached an agreement with European plane maker Airbus for the 75 Airbus A321neo jets, with delivery estimated to be between 2028 and 2029.
“We remain on track to become a 500 aircraft airline group by the end of the decade while delivering our commitment to reduce our already industry-leading CO2 emissions by 25 percent by 2030,” Váradi said as reported by Business Insider on September 15, 2022.
“The combination of Wizz Air’s ultra-low-cost operation and the market-leading Airbus A321neo aircraft together create a strong platform for Wizz Air’s future growth in the coming decade as we further strengthen our position as one of the world’s most sustainable airlines,” the CEO was quoted as saying.
Wizz Air, which currently operates 153 Airbus family aircraft, announced that it had signed an agreement with Airbus for the purchase of 102 Airbus A321 planes in November 2021. At the time, the order included 75 A321neos and 27 A321XLRs.
