LOT Polish B787 Dreamliner suffers passenger window damage while landing in JFK

It has been said that broken mirrors bring bad luck, but what about broken windows? Passenger plane windows, to be specific. 

A LOT Polish Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft was enroute to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) from Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) when one of its passenger windows sustained cracks during its descent.

Just months earlier, the same B787-800 aircraft, registration SP-LRA, experienced a mid-air emergency when one of its passenger windows showed signs of burns and scorch marks on a flight from Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) to WAW in January 2022.

Independent aviation publication Aviation Herald reported that the latest window incident occurred on August 20, 2022, and that the aircraft was able to perform a safe landing.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s passenger windows have a trademark feature of electric dim settings so windows can be dimmed or ‘opened’ at the touch of a button rather than having to open or close a window manually. 

LOT Polish reported that the electro photochromic layer used to darken the passenger window was damaged, but that the tightness of the window was intact. The aircraft was then dispatched for the return flight, and the damaged window will be replaced in Warsaw.
