Aberdeen Airport (ABZ) in the north-east of Scotland had to briefly suspend operations on August 15, 2022 to fix its runway.

A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) stated that Runway 16/34 at ABZ was closed to fixed wing aircraft due to unscheduled work in progress. An updated NOTAM valid until 13:30 UTC indicated that the runway was available for use, but that the landing distance available (LDA) and take-off run available (TORA) for runway 34 was 1,276 meters, instead of the published 1,953m.

“We can confirm we are currently carrying out some unscheduled maintenance work and have had to temporarily suspend operations,” the airport operator announced on social media.

“We aim to have this completed as quickly as possible with minimum disruption, however, we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the airport said, adding it was providing passengers with refreshment vouchers.

Some airports in the United Kingdom recently had to restrict operations due to high temperatures affecting runways. However, current weather for ABZ on August 15, 2022 shows temperatures of 16 degrees with rain forecast.

As well as serving passenger airlines including Loganair, British Airways, easyJet and KLM, Aberdeen Airport is also a major heliport, transporting workers to North Sea oil and gas rigs.

Loganair advised passengers it was working on contingency plans, but that disruption was likely. Information on the airport’s website showed a handful of cancellations, with some late arrivals and departures.
