Hong Kong start-up Greater Bay Airlines has announced a leadership change, with its current chief executive departing for a new role with the new government in Hong Kong.

Stanley Hui Hon Chung, currently a member of the airline’s board, will replace Algernon Yau with immediate effect, the airline announced on June 27, 2022.

Algernon Yau will be sworn in as the Minister for Commerce and Economic Development on July 1, 2022.

The change of chief executive comes at a critical time for the airline, which has yet to launch scheduled services. It had hoped to launch operations in summer 2021 but has repeatedly delayed the plans due to travel restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It currently has a fleet of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with a third due to join in late 2022. The airline’s third aircraft had previously been due to join the fleet in July 2022.
