Icelandic carrier PLAY’s transatlantic ambitions are on, with the low-cost airline revealing its first US destinations.

The airline plans to start flights to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) from April 20, 2022 and Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) from May 11, 2022. Tickets are on sale now, PLAY said in a statement on December 16, 2021.

PLAY will operate to the United States using A320neo and A321neo aircraft.

The announcement marks the second stage of PLAY’s business plans. It commenced operations in July 2021 as a short-haul carrier, flying to European destinations from its hub in Keflavik, Iceland.

Like defunct Icelandic low-cost carrier WOW, PLAY wants to use its base in Iceland to connect the United States and Europe with narrowbody aircraft.

“Travelers around the world are hungry to venture to new destinations and recent data shows that nearly two thirds of Americans are planning their next vacations, with international destinations top of mind,” PLAY chief executive Birgir Jónsson said in a press statement.

The new US destinations means it will operate to a total of 24 destinations in Europe and the United States in 2022.

PLAY carried 16,689 passengers in November 2021. Its load factor dropped to 58.3% in the month, from 67.7% in October 2021.

PLAY said on December 7, 2021 when it issued the traffic figures that long-term bookings remained strong but short-term bookings had been hit by uncertainty over rising COVID-19 cases and the Omicron variant.
