An American Airlines Boeing 737 passenger aircraft was diverted to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), US, after crew members reported a suspicious burning smell in the flight deck.

The incident occurred on November 17, 2021, when the American Airlines Boeing 737-800 jet, registered as N976NN, was performing flight AA-2813, connecting New York and Austin.

According to the Flightradar24.com data, the plane departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 8.41 a.m. (UTC) and was scheduled to land at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) a few hours later.

However, when the aircraft was flying at FL340 near Pittsburgh, the flight crew noticed an unusual smell of smoke in the flight deck. After donning their crew oxygen masks, the pilots decided to immediately divert the jet to the nearest airport. As flight records indicate, the flight crew landed the plane and successfully stopped on the runway of Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) at around 11.22 a.m. (UTC).

Suspecting a potential in-flight fuel leakage, the flight crew requested that PIT airport emergency services check the plane. But once the inspection was completed, the pilots taxied the jet to the apron and no further incidents were reported.
