It appears that business is not just back as usual, but doing even better in Cancun. The famous holiday destination in Mexico has recorded 1.66 million passenger arrivals for the month of September 2021.

That’s 4.4% more travelers than in the pre-pandemic equivalent month of September 2019, according to the Airports of the Southeast group, the organization that manages Cancun International Airport (CUN).

Mexico, a country where tourism makes up 8.5% of its GDP, has not yet imposed any restrictions on  incoming travelers.

Although land borders between the United States and Mexico are temporarily closed until October 21, 2021, proof of vaccination, COVID-19 tests, and quarantines are not required for visiting Mexico. Travelers to Mexico must merely complete a health declaration form and scan the QR code it generates upon their arrival.

International travelers arriving at CUN airport must go through a thermal scanner to measure their body temperature and check for fever.

Compared to other international destinations where negative tests, vaccination, or quarantine (or sometimes all of the above) are required, this relatively easy and convenient barrier to enter Mexico  makes Cancun even more attractive.

The majority of tourists that come to Mexico are from the United States. During the first quarter of 2020, 34% of tourists in Cancun were Americans.
