Vietnamese leisure airline, Bamboo Airways, will reportedly sign a deal with General Electric (GE) worth $2 billion to acquire new GEnx engines. The new engines bound to power the airline’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners are expected to be delivered starting 2022.

“This new signing agreement will be an important milestone for the airline to expand its transcontinental flight network, connecting Vietnam with medium- and long-range markets,” Bamboo Airways in a statement seen by Reuters on September 21, 2021.

AeroTime News has asked Bamboo Airways for a comment.

GEnx is the best selling engine on the 787 Dreamliner as well as Boeing 747 quad jet. Based on GE90 architecture, GEnx engine offers up to 15% improved fuel efficiency and 15% less carbon emissions compared to GE’s CF6 engine.

“With the highest pressure ratio compressor in commercial service today, the GEnx has the best fuel efficiency in its thrust class, enabling it to power many of the longest routes,” the manufacturer claims.

Currently, Bamboo Airways has a total of 28 aircraft in its fleet with an average aircraft age of 7 years old, Planespotters.net data shows. The airline’s fleet comprises 12 Airbus A320s, eight Airbus A321s, four Embraer ERJ-190s, three Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and one Airbus A319 aircraft.

The Boeing orders and deliveries data shows that Bamboo Airways has 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order. Out of 10 Dreamliners, three widebody aircraft have already been delivered to the airline. With Dreamliners in its fleet, Bamboo Airways aims to connect Vietnam with key markets in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
