Counting the last days until its debut in Europe, the newest Icelandic airline PLAY will try to conquer the European low-cost market.

The new Icelandic airline will start its operations by launching seven flights to European cities with a debut flight to London Stansted Airport (STN) due on June 24, 2021. PLAY already noted that early destinations would include cities such as Paris, Copenhagen, Alicante, Berlin, and Tenerife.

PLAY will begin operations with its Airbus A321neo jet, which is arriving in Iceland in early June 2021. The following two Airbus A321neos will be delivered in July 2021.

With a fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft, the Icelandic airline would be able to conduct long-haul operations in the future. The airline has outlined plans to expand across the Atlantic if the launch in the European market is successful, Bloomberg reported.

On May 16, 2021, the Icelandic Transport Authority (ITA) granted PLAY an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC).

“We have the best people who have shown tremendous strength over a period of almost two years. It is a long time which we have used well to prepare the low-cost airline for a turnaround in tourism in Iceland. To future clients of PLAY I want to say this; we look forward to welcoming you on board our modern and efficient aircraft,” CEO of PLAY Birgir Jónsson said.
