A Hungarian low-cost air carrier Wizz Air opened its 42nd base, which is located in Palermo, Italy. The airline plans to base two Airbus A321 aircraft in June 2021.

The new base is the airline’s fourth base in Italy, following Bari, Catania, and Milan Malpensa. Now, the air carrier plans to launch 7 new international routes and 4 domestic Italian services, according to the Wizz Air announcement, released on March 4, 2021.

Speaking at the press conference, George Michalopoulos, the Chief Commercial Officer at Wizz Air, pointed out that the airline’s expansion plans would not only offer “more affordable” travel opportunities for its customers but would also contribute to the local economies recovery as well as the recovery of the tourism industry in particular.

“After 17 years of successful operations in Italy, I am delighted to announce our fourth Italian base in Palermo. [The] announcement underpins our commitment to developing our presence in Italy and offering more affordable travel opportunities while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety protocols. Our state-of-the-art aircraft as well as our enhanced protective measures will ensure the best possible sanitary conditions for travelers,” Michalapoulos added.

The airline hopes that the new domestic Italian routes will enable its passengers to travel within Italy in a sustainable and safe way, while the international services connecting Italy with the United Kingdom and Switzerland will strengthen economic ties between the regions and countries.

According to the Planespotters.com data, Wizz Air has a total of 48 Airbus A321 aircraft, while 35 jets are parked.
