During an exercise on September 22, 2020, a Russian Su-30 fighter jet was shot down by another aircraft. Both pilots successfully managed to eject.

A day after the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that one of its Su-30 fighter jets crashed, media reports say that the aircraft was in fact brought down by friendly fire.

“According to preliminary data, the Su-30 was accidentally hit during the drills by another aircraft,” an emergency services source told TASS agency. Other media sources report that it was targeted by a Sukhoi Su-35, which had been armed by mistake. The aircraft crashed in a wooded area of the Tver region, near the Russian border with Belarus.

In April 2017, a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet crashed during a training mission after being shot down by its own wingman.
