A Caspian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83 suffered a runway excursion at Bandar Mahshahr Airport (MRX), in Iran. The aircraft, with 135 passengers on board, ended its course in the middle of a highway.
The Flight 6936 took off from Mehrabad International Airport (THR), Tehran, to Mahshahr Airport in the southwest of the country. Upon landing, the aircraft registered EP-CPZ, ran off the runway, skidded 90 meters beyond the threshold, through the airport perimeter before finally coming to a stop on a highway.
Initial reports state that no one was injured in the incident. All passengers managed to safely get out of the plane, according to IRNA news agency. Footage shows people being deplaned from the emergency doors by onlookers. Emergency services arrived shortly after.
An investigation to determine the cause of the incident was opened. Currently, it is believed that one of the landing gears might have exploded upon landing, according to local news Khabar.
