Cathay Pacific has unveiled its latest inflight safety video which showcases the airline’s home city of Hong Kong, and all that the city has to offer to visitors. The new video takes customers through the pre-flight safety procedures on each Cathay Pacific flight but set against the dynamic backdrop of Hong Kong.

The airline follows in the footsteps of British Airways, Korean Air, and Qantas which have all relaunched their own onboard safety videos since the start of 2024.

According to the carrier, the new video presents “a creative and compelling storytelling that delivers all essential safety demonstrations while showcasing the best that the airline’s home city has to offer.”

The new video was developed in close collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and it is hoped will provide all the necessary safety information while educating the airline’s passengers “in an informative and engaging way”.

Scenes featured in the final cut were shot at various locations across Hong Kong to showcase the city and its attractions. Viewers are transported to a dai pai dong, said to be the quintessential Hong Kong dining experience, for the “no smoking” announcement, before finding themselves amidst an exhilarating dragon boat race which provides the backdrop for the life jacket demonstration. Moving on, Shek O Beach sets the scene for the emergency and pre-takeoff procedures.

Other locations featured include shopping facilities at Causeway Bay, Xiqu Centre at the West Kowloon Cultural District, the iconic Peak Tram, Yau Ma Tei’s historic Tin Hau Temple, and the serene Clearwater Bay Country Park.

To mark the launch of the video, Cathay Pacific held a preview event at The Sky Lounge, The Upper House on July 26, 2024, hosted by Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau and attended by guests including Hong Kong Tourism Board Executive Director Dane Cheng and Commissioner for Tourism Vivian Sum.

“At Cathay Pacific, safety has always been at the heart of everything we do, and this new video embodies our commitment to keeping our customers informed and prepared while fostering our Move Beyond spirit,” said Lavinia Lau.

“We wanted to put our own spin on the video and create something truly memorable that resonates with our global audience and showcases the true essence of our home city on the move. We are deeply appreciative of the support from HKTB, which has allowed us to weave together inflight safety information and the vibrant offerings of Hong Kong in a gripping video,” Lau added.

“HKTB and Cathay Pacific have been long-time partners in promoting Hong Kong’s tourism excellence to visitors worldwide,” said Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Dane Cheng.

“We are excited to join hands to showcase Hong Kong’s vibrant, diverse, and unique east-meets-west experiences through this video, which reaches millions of travelers from all around the world every year. I believe the creative presentation will inspire visitors to submerge themselves in all that Hong Kong has to offer firsthand and enjoy every moment here,” he added.

Replacing the current inflight safety video, which was first unveiled in 2016, the new version will be progressively rolled out across Cathay Pacific flights from August 1, 2024, onwards. With its deep roots in the territory of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has traditionally promoted Hong Kong as a destination and gateway to both business and leisure travelers, and the video certainly follows that tradition.
