Japan Airlines has retired its second-last Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The event was marked by airline employees bidding the wide-body aircraft farewell as it departed to the United States (US).

Imaged posted on Twitter showed Japan Airlines employees holding up a banner that read: “Thank you JA701J” and wishing the aircraft, which is registered as JA701J, a nice flight from Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The aircraft arrived at LAX on May 16, 2023.

Following the retirement of JA701J, Japan Airlines is left with a single Boeing 777-200ER, JA703J. However, the latter has not flown since May 7, 2023, when it arrived at HND on flight JL916 from Okinawa Naha Airport (OKA). Throughout its history, excluding JA701J and JA703J, Japan Airlines had a total of eight 777-200ER and 15 777-200 aircraft, in addition to a fleet of seven 777-300s, which have been phased out, and the remaining 13 777-300ERs.

JA701J was originally delivered to Japan Airlines in July 2002 with a pair of General Electric GE90 engines, according to ch-aviation.com data.

According to data from ch-aviation.com, the aircraft was configured in a 236-seat cabin when it was retired with 154 in economy, 40 in Premium Economy, and 42 in Business. It had no first class seats. Meanwhile, data from planespotters.net showed the aircraft’s last configuration was 26 Business Class and 286 Economy Class seats.
