South Korean authorities are investigating a near miss that occurred between an Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 at Seoul Gimpo Airport (GMP) on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

The South Korean authority will analyze the landing of a Korean Air Boeing on runway 32L, which then seemingly failed to stop in the taxiway before the take-off runway, 32R.

Around the same time, an Air Busan flight 8027 was preparing to take off from runway 32R.

According to the Korea Herald the Korean Air crew were instructed by air traffic control to stop after they became aware the aircraft had not stopped where it was meant to.

Air Busan also said that the airline’s pilots saw the Korean Air jet approaching and initiated an earlier take-off as a precaution.

Korean Air admitted that its aircraft had passed the designated stopping point due to “communication errors” with the airport’s control tower but confirmed it had not committed a runway incursion onto 32R.

A simulation of the near miss at the airport was shared on social media.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport confirmed that if the investigation finds that violations of related laws such as the Aviation Safety Act are found then “strict action” will be taken.
