The TF-X, Turkey’s domestically designed fifth-generation fighter jet, is approaching the end of its assembly process.

An image of what appears to be the almost completed aircraft at a Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) factory has been shared by Turkish media and shows significant progress in comparison with the latest images of the aircraft published by TAI in November 2022.

The roll out ceremony for the TF-X has been scheduled for March 18, 2023, according to Ismail Demir, president of Turkey’s Defence Industry Agency.

The jet, also known as the MMU (Milli Muharip Uçak – National Combat Aircraft), entered assembly some time in 2022. The assembly line was unveiled on November 23, 2022, with footage of the ceremony revealing an already half completed aircraft prototype.

Development of the TF-X began in 2011 and accelerated several years later, after Turkey was barred from procuring the F-35 due to its purchase of Russian S-300 air defense systems.

The aircraft is expected to be a twin-engine fifth-generation fighter jet with stealth features, and outwardly reminiscent of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor.

According to TAI, the maiden flight is planned for 2025 and the start of serial production is scheduled for 2028.
