Alaska Air Cargo introduced a new in-seat package stowage system that would allow the air carrier to bolster cargo capacity by utilizing its passenger aircraft for cargo-only operations.
Alaska Air Cargo outlined that the new in-seat package stowage design will allow it to carry an additional 13,500 pounds (6,123 kilos) of freight in the main passenger cabin.
The solution which was launched by HAECO Cabin Solutions was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The system would allow to carry essential freight in the main deck of the aircraft such as medical equipment, mail, e-commerce package, or other goods.
“Our teams have been working since spring to identify the safest and most effective processes to increase our cargo capacity,” Torque Zubeck, the Managing Director of Alaska Air Cargo, was quoted in a press release on November 19, 2020.
According to Zubeck, the new design would enhance the air carrier’s cargo capacity as well as “protect the supply chain by connecting critical cargo to the communities we serve during this public health crisis.”

Currently, the Alaska Air Cargo fleet consists of 3 Boeing 737-700 freighters, according to planespotters.net data. carrier indicated that an additional Boeing 737-900 passenger jet had been operating as a cargo-only jet that is able to transport up to 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilos) of freight.
Alaska Cargo Airlines commented that after implementation of the new system, the crew for cargo operations would consist of two pilots and two Cargo Load Agents, who would provide the loading and tagging procedures as well as ensure fire suppression if required.
