Cobham Mission Systems announced on April 29, 2021, it won subcontracts to provide chaff and flare dispenser equipment for the German Air Force’s Tranche 4 Eurofighter Typhoon fleet.
Cobham’s Chaff and Flare Defensive Aid Systems include flare dispensers for off-board infrared-seeking missile countermeasures and chaff dispensers that deploy particles to neutralise threats from radar guided missiles.
“These new orders will allow Cobham Mission Systems’ to support the build of 38 Tranche 4 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, which are vital to the European defence industry,” said Duncan Thorndike, vice president of Weapons Carriage and Release for Cobham Mission Systems. “Cobham Mission Systems has supported the Typhoon program from the start and has provided essential equipment for more than 550 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft currently in service.
On November 11, 2020, Airbus has signed a contract for the delivery of 38 new Eurofighter Typhoons to the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force. The order, known as Project Quadriga, is valued at €5.5 billion.
“The new Tranche 4 Eurofighter is currently the most modern European-built combat aircraft with a service life well beyond 2060,” Dirk Hoke, then-CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, said. “Its technical capabilities will allow full integration into the European Future Combat Air System,” Airbus and Dassault Aviation’s project to replace both the Typhoon and the Rafale by 2040.
