British Airways and LHR make arrangements to ensure silence on Queen’s funeral

United Kingdom’s flag carrier British Airways (BA) and London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) have made arrangements to their flights and schedules in order to ensure a moment of silence for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on September 19, 2022.

British Airways will cancel 100 flights from its London Heathrow hub on September 19, 2022, and reschedule others in an effort to reduce noise during the royal funeral, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“As a mark of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her State Funeral, we have reduced our schedule and re-timed some flights at Heathrow to ensure the skies are quiet at certain moments on Monday, September 19th,” British Airways said in a tweet.

The UK carrier will also do live streaming of the Queen’s funeral on their flights that are equipped with in-flight WiFi. Fees for the WiFi and live streaming service will be waived. A two-minute moment of silence will also be carried on-air, where cabin services will also be paused. 

LHR has also implemented some changes in operations and schedules on September 19, 2022, including:

  • Broadcasting the Queen’s funeral on September 19, 2022, at the airport and observing a two-minute silence at the end of the service.

  • Increased emotional support on September 19, 2022, available in LHR’s dedicated chapels and prayer rooms.

  • Closing non-essential shops on September 19, 2022.

In addition, there will be no aircraft movement for 30 minutes between 11:40 and 12:10 local time in LHR. There will also be no arrivals for 35 minutes beginning at 13:45 during the procession of the Queen’s hearse.
