A Cessna 525 Citation business jet has exploded on a beach in Brazil after overshooting the runway while landing at Gastão Madeira State Airport (UBT) in Ubatuba, São Paulo.

The private jet, with registration PR-GFS, departed from the Municipal Airport of Mineiros (SWME) in Mineiros, Goiás, Brazil, on the morning of January 9, 2025.

At approximately 11:20 local time, the aircraft, carrying five occupants, attempted to land at Ubatuba Airport’s lone runway.

Video surveillance from a nearby road captured the moment the aircraft landed, and appeared to skid and overshoot the runway, bursting into flames as it came to a stop on a beach.

Although weather conditions were considered normal at the time of the accident, the video shows nearby street roads appearing to be wet, suggesting that it had recently rained, or that it could have been lightly raining at the time of landing.

The accident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, one of them being the pilot. Eight others were injured – five from the aircraft, three from a nearby skate park.

Ubatuba Airport’s single runway measures 3,000 feet (940 meters) in length. The Cessna Citation jet was manufactured in 2008, and registered in the name of the family of Nelvo Fries. According to the Brazilian Aeronautical Registry (RAB), the Cessna was of normal airworthiness status.
